I left for our deer camp in Monticello with my hubby at noon on Thursday. We arrived around 3p and went straight to my new stand. It's a 20foot double man stand at an awesome location. It rained on us the entire time! I was miserable. More so because Anthony sat with me. LOL He had to eat an apple, chew redman, etc. It actually was fun though! At around dark, I saw a very large buck cross the railroad track across from me. I immediately got buck fever. He was so smart. I never saw him come to the feeder. I could hardly wait to return to my stand on Friday morning.
Friday morning I got to my stand (alone!) with my crossbow.
At 8 a.m., here he comes. All I see is deer and antlers. I am beyond excited. I have my bow ready. But he is sooooo much smarter than me! LOL He came in low and stayed behind a thicket. I could not get a clear shot. He toyed with me for a few minutes then flitted off to the tracks where (I SWEAR) he looked back at me and smiled! I was not amused. After lunch, I went back to my stand where I proceeded to have an allergy attack. I was not feeling well at all. I loaded up on Benadryl and went back to my hotel room deerless. I had decided that I would not hunt Saturday morning. I wanted to feel better. I also decided to forget the crossbow. I wanted to kill a deer so I got my muzzleloader. That way if/when my buck returned I could take a good shot.
Saturday afternoon I get to my stand about an hour earlier than I needed to. 2 cute baby deer show up. They were so small. Their ribs showed. I wish all people that hate hunting would understand that it's necessary for just this reason. These two would starve to death. I let them eat as much corn as they wanted. I really enjoyed watching those guys. They were pretty. They were graceful and smart. Something spooked them after about 30 minutes. It wasn't me. I look up and see a very large doe at the railroad tracks. She is mature AND fat. She immediately sees me and flits away. I was disappointed. I won't shoot a doe if she has her babies with her, but this one was all alone and perfect. No sooner had I watched her flit away, a buck shows up. This is not my buck, but he will do. He was not bright. He didn't even sniff the air. He came just right on in and posed broadside in front of my stand. I shot him. It was an absolutely perfect shot. He ran 30 yards. I heard him fall. I was so excited. He was a big bodied deer for down there and a 6 point. I don't know who was more excited, me or Anthony.
Because I killed a deer, I got to sleep in Sunday. I am ready to go back though. I really want to use my crossbow. I think it is way more difficult; a challenge for sure.
Back at home, I find that my computer has crashed. That's just great. I am looking forward to a full week at school. I need to work just to keep my mind off deer. LOL
Sidenote1: We almost beat MB Nutt. I am over it.
Sidenote2: What the crap is up with school shooting at my alma mater UCA?!?!?!? How awful!
